The correct choice emphasizes that the primary function of a humorous story, as described by Twain, is to elicit laughter in a sophisticated manner. Twain often valued the art of humor that not only entertains but also engages the audience intellectually. This means that humor can be layered, subtle, and rich, allowing for a deeper appreciation of the nuances in storytelling.

In Twain's view, humor serves to entertain but also to provoke thought, encouraging audiences to reflect on the implications of the humor presented. This sophisticated approach to eliciting laughter distinguishes Twain’s style and highlights the ability of humor to address complex ideas and human experiences in a manner that resonates with the audience's intellect and emotions.

In contrast, other functions like merely informing about serious issues or adhering strictly to factual storytelling do not capture the essence of Twain's approach to humor. While quick and efficient entertainment can be a goal, Twain's emphasis was on weaving in sophistication that elevates the humor beyond surface-level amusement.
